Sustainable & Spring Wines for Earth Month

There’s something about spring that makes you want to lighten up — your meals, your mood, and yes, your wine. And since April is Earth Month, it’s the perfect time to raise a glass to wines that are not only delicious, but also good for the planet.

I recently shared my top sustainable wine picks on South Florida Live (because what better place to talk crisp whites and juicy reds than sunny Miami?), and now I’m recapping them here so you can sip with purpose all season long.

Why Sustainability in Wine Matters 🍇

Most people don’t realize that sustainably made wines can dramatically reduce the environmental impact of winemaking — from conserving water to reducing chemical use and encouraging healthy soils. And the best part? You don’t have to sacrifice flavor.

In fact, many of these wines are more expressive, balanced, and food-friendly than their conventional counterparts. Here are three bottles that prove it.

1. Diatom Chardonnay – $27

Bright, crisp, and made for beach days

From Santa Barbara winemaking icon Greg Brewer, this unoaked Chardonnay is spring in a glass. Fermented in cold stainless steel, it skips the butter and brings pure, coastal energy — think lemon zest, citrus blossom, and wet stone. It’s named after the region’s diatomaceous earth soils, made of tiny oceanic fossils, which gives the wine a beautiful minerality and sense of place.

Why I love it: It’s clean, elegant, and basically made for patio sipping, spring seafood, or warm-weather hangouts.

2. Ex Post Facto Pinot Noir – $30

Floral, juicy, and your go-to red for anything on the grill

Also from Greg Brewer, this small-batch Pinot from Sta. Rita Hills undergoes extended skin contact (30 days!), giving it lush red berry flavors, a hint of violets, and a versatile, food-friendly finish. It's made using low-intervention techniques, making it as thoughtful as it is delicious.

Perfect Pairings: Serve it slightly chilled with roasted veggies, spring lamb, or your charcuterie board of choice.

3. Château Lagrange 2018 – $48

This third-growth Bordeaux estate blends Old World pedigree with a modern twist: precision sustainability. That means using vineyard technology and data to minimize water usage, avoid unnecessary spraying, and lower their carbon footprint — all while crafting bold, beautiful reds.

The 2018 vintage is a red blend that brings dark cherry, plum, spice, and just enough oak to feel luxurious without being overbearing. It's smooth, sophisticated, and the ultimate red for richer spring dishes.

Pair With: Grilled steak, eggplant lasagna, or your Sunday roast.

Additional Earth-Friendly Wine Tips You Can Use Every Day 🌎

Look for certifications – Labels like Certified Sustainable, Organic, or Biodynamic show a winery’s eco-commitment.
Know the producer – Many smaller wineries share their sustainability practices right on the label or online.
Less is more – Wines with low intervention (native yeast, no added sulfites, minimal additives) are often more earth-conscious and more expressive.

Final Sip 💬

Spring is the season of renewal — so why not renew the way you drink, too? Whether you’re relaxing beachside, hosting a backyard dinner, or just browsing the wine aisle with purpose, sustainable wines offer a chance to sip smarter.

And remember: sustainability doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor — it means enhancing it.

Cheers to sipping with the planet in mind this Earth Month. 🌿🍷
